In the wake of Coronavirus, a pandemic ravaging global cities, more companies are asking employees to work from home to reduce human contact which is key for the virus’ spread. The WordPress Community Team has also strongly recommended that physical events be postponed, and instead online events be adapted.

And it’s realistic to assume that shifting to the ‘home office’ will become the new normal for many of us for a while. Many of us will be working from home for the first time, which means figuring out how to stay on task in a new environment that may not lend itself to productivity. But there are ways to deliver results and avoid going stir-crazy, from setting up a good workspace to the way you talk to your team and clients.

Charlotte has been working from home since 2009 when she arrived in Uganda and she recently shared some tips through her blog: https://www.muzungubloguganda.com/travel-tips/travel-health/corona-virus-survival-tips-how-to-work-from-home/ (which she manages using WordPress). She will be sharing more with our community during this webinar.

Also, during this period, many people are spending a lot of time online than before. During this period, we have noticed a high volume of spam and fake news posted in our community forums, especially WhatsApp chat groups. Many members are living in fear and boredom and keep forwarding chain spam posts ignorantly.
Cyber Security issues such as Spam, online scams and frauds, identity theft and issues related to online purchases are a serious issue in the online world. Navigating the Web while avoiding these threats can be a challenging task.

We shall be joining our friends from several wordpress communities in Uganda ie WordPress Jinja, Kampala and Makerere

We shall be using Zoom Video Conferencing software for this meetup. Members are encouraged to install the zoom application on their laptops and phones before the start of the meeting.

You can install the application through this link https://us04web.zoom.us/j/756404349 before joining the Meeting, ID:[masked].

Members are also encouraged to watch the how-to videos on usage and features of the zoom listed on this page: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/206618765-Zoom-Video-Tutorials so that they are comfortable using the technology.

Rogers is the national coordinator of the ICT Teachers Association of Uganda (ictteachersug.net) and he coordinates several WhatsApp groups with thousands of members. UPDATE 19/03/2020:
Following the WordPress Community team recommendations for event organizers in light of COVID-19 (https://make.wordpress.org/community/2020/03/11/new-recommendations-for-event-organizers-in-light-of-covid-19/) and the President of Uganda's address on avoiding the pandemic, ( https://www.yowerikmuseveni.com/address-corona-virus-covid-19-guidelines-avoiding-pandemic ), we are sadly postponing our earlier scheduled March Meetup on Choosing and Customising WordPress themes.

Apologies to all those who look forward to the meetup each month, but based on the most recent advice for managing this Pandemic, self-isolation, and social distancing are two of the most important things everyone can do at the moment, to help prevent the spread of this virus. And of course, always practice good hygiene and make sure you wash your hands.

Good hygiene includes:

- Covering your coughs and sneezes with your elbow or a tissue
- Disposing of tissues properly
- Washing your hands often with soap and water, including before and after eating and after going to the toilet
- Using alcohol-based hand sanitisers
- Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces
- If you are sick, avoiding contact with others and staying more than 1.5 metres away from people

At this time, we have tentatively postponed the meetup to Saturday 25th April, but as usual, we'll keep a watchful eye on the news related to COVID-19 update the Meetup page closer to the date.

If you're looking for a WordPress fix, head over to https://wordpress.tv where you'll find a heap of fantastic videos on all sorts of topics, including videos from recent WordCamps from all around the world (https://wordpress.tv/category/wordcamptv). Videos from WordCamp Kampala have recently been uploaded. Please also subscribe to our YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8SL8tp2OvdBPcQEqF41J5A we are going to start uploading video resources for the community.

Dont forget to create your account on our joint community blog at https://www.wcuganda.org/register, through which all of us can publish blog posts related to WordPress and related topics.

Thank you everyone, for your understanding, and please stay safe.

Most beginners feel overwhelmed when it comes to selecting a theme for their WordPress site. There are thousands of free and paid options. Each theme looks better than the other. How do you choose the best theme for your WordPress site?

You need find the right theme for your specific needs – it should have the functionality required for your project. Check the options offered by the theme before creating a child theme. Does it offer the basic appearance and sense of what you need? For example, if it’s an ecommerce site you’re building, check for ecommerce functionality; if you want to include testimonials, make sure that functionality is already integrated. This is especially important if you’re a newbie. Finding a theme that already comes with the features you need will save a ton of time.

After selecting your perfect theme, you will need to customize it to appear the way you envisioned it. It is possible to customize any WP theme using the inbuilt customizer.

During this meetup, we shall discuss all the things you should consider, so you can choose the best WordPress theme and suitably customize it for your site.
