Responsive First: Why Designing for Small Screens Makes Big Sense - Presented by Meagan Hanes

It's 2020 and people still design websites for laptops first - websites are generally built on a computer, after all. However, this does a disservice to actual internet users who access your site on a variety of devices, sizes and capabilities. A key principle of design is: less is more. Designing your website using a phone-first approach ensures a strong alignment to data hierarchy, information conveyance, and high performance - while ignoring common modern theme pitfalls such as over-inflated images and needless accessibility-failing animations. In this talk I'll show key differences in my responsive-first design approach, with attention paid in particular to the new Block Editor in WordPress.

Remote Only Meetup for Tuesday April 7th at 3:00PM
==============================================================
Come to this Meetup to explore all the CSS page styling features in WordPress. This session will involve direct fixes to your WordPress website. Price of admission: have your website admin ready and give us the URL of the page for fixing in the Zoom Chat window.

First, although the WordPress mantra is "No Coding Required", we are going to reverse course and say that WordPress owners should be comfortable with basic CSS.[Here is a great youtube intro - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ukg_U3CnJWI ] Knowing basic CSS will make your page styling more efficient. You will be more confident doing direct CSS fixes. Also the point and click PageBuilder CSS styling will make much more sense.

Second, users will discover the power behind PageBuilder Styling. All of the PageBuilders and the new ThemeBuilders have powerful tools for styling not only the widgets, but the rows, blocks and sections that make up your page layout. What is most interesting is that users will discover that PageBuilder styling goes beyond CSS and adds animations, scrolling, hover and popup appearance options.

Third, there is a group of CSS styling plugins that allow users to fix the really tough styling problem. Ranging from the free SiteOrigin CSS plugin through CSSHero to Yellow Pencil - a demo of how they can be used will be shown.

Finally, we shall learn the important mobile responsive features available in PageBuilders/ThemeBuilders. Users now have the opportunity to style for specific devices - mobile cellphones, tablets, and desktops. This is an area where some feature changes are rapid and in beta.

This meetup will be user driven. In signing up, tell us the order the 4 topics areas should be discussed. Come with your questions and problems to be solved. If you do have a website problem, preload the free SiteOrigin CSS if its a CSS styling problem and tell us the page URL with the problem to be fixed.

We have reserved 4 hours of Zoom time, but the bulk of the presentation will end in about 2 1/2 hours. So you can leave early. If you want a copy of the presentation video or the PowerPoint slides, leave your email address. There will be a charge for these items not to exceed $20 and to recover Zoom and other costs.

Containerization (Docker) for Software Developers
---

The end is nigh. Your application is almost ready, and you will need to deploy it. And with the deployment, the endless tweaking to get everything running in a production environment. If only there were a way to test everything in that environment first. This is where containers will come in to save the day. With a container, you not only run your code in an environment similar to the production server, but it is also the production environment. In this talk, the attendees will learn about how to create container friendly applications, how to use containers to share their code with their team, and finally, how to use those same containers to deploy to a production server with minimal effort.

Presented by: Joel Lord. Joel is passionate about web and technology in general. He likes to learn new things, but most of all, he likes to share his discoveries. He does so by travelling to various conferences all around the globe.

He graduated with a college degree in computer programming back in the last millennium. Apart from a little break to get his BSc in computational astrophysics, he has always been in the industry. As a developer advocate with Red Hat OpenShift, he meets with developers to help them make the web a better place.

During his free time, he is usually found stargazing in a campsite somewhere or brewing a fresh batch of beer in his garage.

While the new Gutenberg editor provides an extensive library of pre-built elements or ‘blocks’, what if you need something that's not there? If there are content blocks that you need frequently but that the editor, plugins or themes don’t offer (yet), creating your own makes sense. This WordPress Meetup will provide a code-heavy demo of how Gutenberg Blocks are created in WordPress. You will learn how to create a plugin and add a "Hello Word" Gutenberg Block and then look at a few more advanced options.

If you are a developer who has not yet attended one of our monthly WordPress Meetups, this will be a great session to come and get to know us!

NOTICE:
This is the rescheduled March topic. If the next few weeks of social distancing measures are extended, the April 20th event will most likely become an online event using either Zoom or Webex, I haven’t decided yet. Stay tuned for that announcement with links and instructions — should it be necessary.

Meeting Description:
When it comes to choosing a Theme for your WordPress website, there are a ton of options to choose from. There are currently over 5,000+ free themes in the WordPress directory, plus countless premium themes available for purchase from various Wordpress developers and on reseller marketplace sites. So, how do you choose the best theme for your site?

In this session, we will review the things you should consider when selecting a WordPress theme to use. Selecting a Theme is no small task. It is said that WordPress can be used to create virtually any kind of website. Therefore, there are Themes which can work well for any type of site you want to create.

Generally, when choosing a Theme, you want it to complement your site’s content. One of the problem with choosing a Theme based purely on it’s looks, however, is that while many themes look amazing, they are, unfortunately, poorly-coded and full of extra garbage that can make your site sluggish. No one likes a website which loads slowly, and it can even cause Google to penalize you in search rankings, so you definitely need to take these performance concerns into consideration.

So lets explore some of the questions we can ask in order to make an informed choice. Lets learn how we can to do some research to educate ourselves, and in the end, choose Themes which are fast, are coded well and are well-supported by their developers.

Bring your thoughts, recommendations and experiences with the Themes you've worked with and lets share some knowledge on Wordpress Themes.

Thank you to our venue Sponsor tbk Creative!

This meeting will held in the tbk Creative boardroom. tbk is located at 562 Wellington Street, across from Victoria Park. There is parking in behind the building (entrance off of Wolfe St), and street parking along Central Ave.

This meetup is a group site-clinic. The host, experienced WordPress developers in attendance will work to help fix an issue or address a challenge someone in the meetup is facing.

Here's a video from last month's first virtual meeting:

https://vimeo.com/399530843

To gain priority for your "help" request, please explain your issue prior to the meeting in the comments section below.

Participating before the meetup by submitting your question with your URL in the Comment section will allow attendees and hosts to offer immediate advice before the meeting and get your question PRIORITIZED at the meetup. Please be clear, concise and include your website and all relevant links. Let us know what steps you've taken to try to fix your problem and where you're stuck.

The rest of the group will have a chance to get their fixes addressed at the meeting in an order determined by the hosts. If there's any fixes that the group can't get to in time, someone in the meetup may tackle them with you 1 on 1, online or in the next meeting.

***Important Note*** The hosts/attendees are not responsible for any breaks that may occur during the process of attempting to fix your site at the meeting (or afterwards). The hosts HIGHLY recommend you have a backup of your site, just in case something unexpected happens. You can also let us know that you'd like ideas on fixes rather than actually attempting a fix during the meeting.

We are pleased to have our meetup sponsored by 2 sponsors:

"Thanks for your help at the Meetup! This is the first one I’ve been to that is so genuinely focused on helping people solve the challenges they are having with their site. Everyone got a chance to share what they wanted fixed and Alex and other people helped solve the issues. It was good to see all the brainstorming and the solutions! I would highly recommend going to this Meetup." Heather M.

"Great to see practically all members contributing to solve problems. Perhaps one day soon, this newbie will have something constructive to contribute as well." Heinrich D.

If you are trying to decide what WordPress PageBuilder or ThemeBuilder to use, this presentation will provide insights on how to make that choice. The decision is complicated by the fact there over a dozen well rated PageBuilder and ThemeBuilder tools with different capabilities and costs.

Your website usage needs will influence your choice. Key determinants are patterns of use and the need for integration. For example, financial transaction needs for a shopping or donations website may require special security and reporting features. Or a multi-membership website with different member privileges may require a multi-user capable theme.

The second part of the equation is the different prices, support and feature sets among over a dozen tools. In many cases a low cost PageBuilder will be more than sufficient given immediate startup needs. One goal will be to define what situations demand a move up to a ThemeBuilder.

The presentation will feature many real world samples of PageBuilder and ThemeBuilder capabilities in action. Feedback from attendees on their experiences with different PageBuilders or ThemeBuilders will be appreciated.

We have reserved 4 hours of Zoom time, but the bulk of the presentation will end in about 2 1/2 hours. So you can leave early. If you want a copy of the presentation video or the PowerPoint slides, leave your email address. There will be a charge for these items not to exceed $20 and to facilitate recovering Zoom and other costs.

Local Development Sites - Led by Miriam Goldman
---
Most developers use a local environment, to develop their websites, before moving them to a staging environment online. This allows you to develop without having to worry about hosting or domain names (yet). We'll discuss why you should take this approach, and show some different options you can employ.

NOTES:
- All live options will be shown on a Mac, but we will discuss the Windows/Linux equivalent.
- To migrate sites to/from local environments backups are often used, so you may wish to attend the May 6th meetup prior to this one, where backups will be discussed.

This meetup is a group site-clinic. The host(s), experienced WordPress developers in attendance and everyone else will work to help fix an issue or address a challenge someone in the meetup is facing.

Make sure you have your administrative credentials ready. Our projector has an HDMI video port. If you need to connect your laptop please bring an adapter to broadcast to an HDMI port.

Something wrong with your site? Need to add/change/remove something on your site and don't know how? Then this meetup is for you. Experienced WordPress developers in attendance will endeavour to help correct issues that members in attendance are facing on their sites, and/or provide suggestions to fix the site.

WordPress sites can be complex and it is not possible to foresee all ramifications to changes. We STRONGLY recommend you have a backup of your site in case something unexpected happens. This meetup is a group site-clinic. The host(s), experienced WordPress developers in attendance and everyone else will work to help fix an issue or address a challenge someone in the meetup is facing.

Make sure you have your administrative credentials ready. Our projector has an HDMI video port. If you need to connect your laptop please bring an adapter to broadcast to an HDMI port.

A few tips for meetup attendees. Say these to yourself before you attend:

"I will always greet you so you know you’re in the right place."

"I will not condescend to you when I’m explaining things."

"I will make room for vulnerability; admitting you don’t know something is hard."

"I will make sure you’re invited to the table."

"I will shed light, not heat." from https://josepha.blog/2018/11/20/making-the-most-of-your-wordpress-meetup-experience/

Comments from our attendees:

"Thanks, Alex and company for a great session. It was helpful to get some answers and see what other WPers are facing." Tim H.

Once you have registered for the event, please leave your URL and question in the comments section of this event. Assistance will be provided on a FIRST COME FIRST SERVED BASIS, starting with those who have submitted their URL down below PRIOR to the start date taking precedence.

Agenda:
6:00pm - 6:15pm | Introduction
6:15pm - 7:45pm | Site Clinic
7:45pm - 7:50pm | Closing Remarks
7:50pm - 8:00pm | Networking & Refreshments

What to Bring:
- Laptop with HDMI port & WIFI capabilities
- Wordpress website URL to be diagnosed
- Wordpress administrator username & password
- Notebook & pen
- Business cards (optional)

What are you able to say about your website currently: is it an attractive storefront for your business, or a bit of a mess? Does it highlight your business' best qualities or does it simply cover up some clear deficiencies? Flaws and common mistakes can be less glaring, but can still be very harmful to your overall bottomline.

The purpose of the Brampton Wordpress Meetup - Fix My Site Clinic is to help you understand how to do a better job at moving people through your website and in essence, helping you connect with your audience, whether it be potential clients, customers or readers.

Spend a couple of hours each month with a friendly, bubbly group of like-minded entrepreneurs, coders, Wordpress enthusiasts and get your most pertinent questions solved, and build some connections along the way as well... Everybody wins!

This meetup is a group site-clinic. The host(s), experienced WordPress developers in attendance and everyone else will work to help fix an issue or address a challenge someone in the meetup is facing.

Make sure you have your administrative credentials ready. Our projector has an HDMI video port. If you need to connect your laptop please bring an adapter to broadcast to an HDMI port.
